In 1982, prior to Pope John Paul's visit to Scotland, Archbishop Winning wrote to all the parishes in Glasgow suggesting they do something within each church to bring the parishioners closer together and help prepare for the Papal visit.

At the St Andrews parish, David Coia spoke to Monsignor Henry, our Parish Priest at that time, suggesting we organise a Golf Tournament.

Monsignor Henry was delighted with the idea and David Coia donated the John Paul Trophy which was played for at Callander Golf Club.

The event was a great success and the trophy was won by Michael Reilly. In the course of the evening, discussion took place about making it an annual event.

Prominent in this debate about the future of the competition were Tim O'Sullivan, Hugh Wilson, Michael Reilly and Jim Mooney. It was decided that a permanent Golf Society should be started. Michael Reilly re-donated  his prize and this became the principal trophy competed for each year.

In the early years a great deal of work was done by the aforementioned and many others including Jim McAllister, David Sutherland, Gerry Traynor, Terry McGahan and Peter Rourke.

Over the years other Trophy's were donated—The Bill Anderson Trophy—The Rose Henery Memorial Scroll—The Moffat Tankerd (so named because it was first played at Moffat Golf Club)

The Society now has 43 members and enjoys two outings each year to some of the best golf courses in Scotland. In addition, the annual singles and fourball competitions are keenly contested at the local clubs as Society members challenge their opponents to play at their own ‘home’ course. Social activity is centred around the outings as well as our AGM and Christmas lunch.

In summary……The Society is a great way to meet fellow golf enthusiasts and play the best courses in the East Dunbartonshire area, as well as further afield.
